Shou

Shou

The Shou or Chou is frequently seen, but not often understood by anyone not able to understand Chinese; the symbol is an ancient ideogram meaning ‘long life’. Despite its antiquity, it still appears in many places on furniture woven into fabric and made into jewellery. The symbol looks a little like a peach stone. The peach was the symbol of the god Shou Hsing, who controlled beings. The peach belonging to the god conferred the gift of immortality.
