Moqwaoi

Moqwaoi

In Menominee Indian legend, Moqwaoi is the wolf brother of the giant Hare, Manabusch. One day he walked out onto the frozen lake and was pulled under the ice by Anamakiu an underworld spirit. Manabusch moaned for his brother for four days, but on the fifth day, Moqwaoi ghost visited Manabusch and told him to make great fire that would guide the dead to their new home and keep them warm on their journey. Manabusch’s attempt to revenge the death of his brother but led to a great inundation that flooded the world.
