Whist Hounds
Whist or wish hounds are spectral hounds that run all over the south-west of England, especially in Dartmoor and Cornwell. They are a form of the Wild Hunt, led by the devil, so says the folklore, but the leader of the hunt and chief whipper-in of the hounds is no less a personage than Sir Francis Drake, the first circumnavigator of the globe. He is said to lead a phantom procession of headless hounds that precedes the hearse of the dead.
